Economic growth with CEE-specific obstacles
2021 was a year of recovery in Central and Eastern Europe. Due to growing household consumption, rising wages and declining unemployment, the pandemic recession came to a halt. Following a 4% drop in 2020, the GDP grew by 6% in the region last year.
Despite the positive economic trends, CEE-countries faced specific challenges. Contrary to Western Europe, economies in the region experienced an increase of headline inflation, partly because of the rising energy prices. Disruptions of the automotive industry’s global supply chain caused hardships in several CEE-markets, in many of which the production and export of cars accounts for around 10% of the local GDP.
By contrast, e-commerce proved highly successful in the region last year. The growth-rate of B2C e-commerce turnover in Central and Eastern Europe was higher than in Western Europe (18% und 16% vs 12%), and the percentage of internet users that bought goods online grew by 5%.
