The Political Environment of the Media Market in Hungary 2023

After the turbulent atmosphere of the parliamentary elections in 2022, the situation had relatively clarified by 2023.

In general, two main processes motivated this shift: on one hand, the ongoing inflation within the European Union, and on the other, the dominance of social media. Due to its extensive reach, most players prefer to invest in social media rather than in print or online newspapers. However, Hungarians have not completely abandoned TV. Companies still prioritize advertising on major channels during prime time.

The year started with a significant event from a TV perspective: Vodafone, which had previously absorbed UPC, was acquired by the Hungarian state.
