The Political Environment of the Media Market in Romania 2024

The year 2024 was fully dominated by elections, with four rounds: local, European parliamentary, parliamentary, and presidential.

The latter rounds created an unprecedented situation, as they were cancelled without any irrefutable evidence being presented. This generated disputes at all levels, and, unsurprisingly, major media outlets – particularly television and online platforms – were deeply divided. Public interest in key issues, including social, economic, and geopolitical matters, grew significantly, leading to notable increases in audience engagement.

Political influence through advertising remained intense, raising questions about the transparency of media financing. During the first half of 2025, all major media sites reported substantial spending on media exposure by both political parties and “independent” candidates.
