The Political Environment of the Media Market in Serbia 2023

Parliamentary elections were held in Serbia in December 2023 to elect members of the National Assembly. The leading party, SPS, won the elections again.

In October 2023, MPs voted for a new law on public information and media governing electronic media, despite widespread criticism from watchdogs and media experts who claimed the changes could increase government control over television.

The law states that publishers or producers of media content cannot be established by the republic, or by an institution or legal entity that is publicly owned or financed by public revenues. However, it allows exceptions in cases where the founder of the media outlet is a capital company engaged in electronic communications activities.
