The Political Environment of the Media Market in Slovakia 2023

Some political figures are buying media agencies, raising concerns about the erosion of freedom of expression and reducing diversity in the media market. This trend threatens media independence.

The Slovak Parliament has also approved changes to the Act on Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), introducing new financing methods. RTVS warns that this could lead to reduced production, layoffs, increased debt, and the potential cancellation of channels like :24 and Sport.

At the European level, the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act were adopted in 2022 to improve transparency in political ads and combat disinformation, giving users more control over online content.
