The Political Environment of the Media Market in Slovenia 2024

In 2024, Slovenia’s media market continued to reflect political polarization and ongoing debates over media independence. Political influence remained evident in ownership structures, particularly across print and online outlets.

At the end of the year, the government approved a draft Media Act and submitted it to Parliament. Aligned with the EU’s Media Freedom Act, the proposal introduces digital media regulation, mandates transparency in ownership and AI labeling, strengthens oversight of media concentration by AKOS*, improves rules on state advertising, and includes support schemes to promote media plurality, protect journalistic sources, and combat hate speech.
